MESSENGER Educator Fellow

The MESSENGER Educator Fellowship Program is recruiting new Fellows for the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 academic years. A cadre of about 30 Fellows will be selected to conduct teacher training workshops nationally for pre-K-12 educators. These workshops will introduce educators to educational materials related to the MESSENGER mission to Mercury.

Fellows will attend an all-expense-paid, five-day workshop in Washington, D.C. Fellows will also receive materials needed to conduct workshops and an annual allowance to cover workshop expenses.

Call for entries for the 2008 Discovery Education/3M Young Scientist Challenge

Discovery Education and 3M are proud to partner with NASA for the 2008 Young Scientist Challenge. Currently in its 10th year, the YSC encourages the exploration of science among America’s youth and promotes the importance of science communication at a critical age when interest in science begins to decline.

The challenge sponsors are looking for a few great students and teachers who can inspire others with their enthusiasm for science and their ability to communicate. What does it take to be America's Top Young Scientist or America's Top Science Teacher? Students in grades 5-8 and teachers of grades K-12 are being asked to create a short (1-2 minute) video about one of this year's scientific topics, which all relate to this year's theme, “The Science of Space.” Participants should enter their videos online and will become eligible to win a trip to Washington, D.C., in the fall to compete in the YSC finals at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

Science teachers who are interested in participating must be members of the Discovery Educator Network. Becoming a member is easy and registration is free. To become a member, visit http://community.discoveryeducation.com/about/become_discovery_educator.

El "Institute for Global Environmental Strategies" está auspiciando un concurso titulado "Earth Day Photo Contest" para estudiantes de escuelas intermedias. Se les pide a los estudiantes interesados que tomen una fotografía de algo que está cambiando su ambiente local. Deben de tomar esta fotografía entre el Martes, 22 de abril y el Martes 29 de abril. El cambio puede estar ocurriendo en el patio de la casa del estudiante, afuera de la escuela, en un parque de su comunidad o en algún sitio lejano.

Los participantes deben de investigar y escribir una explicación del cambio que se ha documentado en la fotografía. La explicación debe contestar las siguientes interrogantes:

a. ¿Cuál es el cambio que se ve en la fotografía?
b. ¿Qué pudiera estar ocasionando este cambio?
c. ¿Se esperaba este cambio?
d. ¿Cómo podría afectar el cambio las áreas alrededor al mismo, a la gente?
e. ¿Cómo crees que se vería el área si se fotografiara en el futuro?

El concurso está abierto a todos los estudiantes de escuelas en los Estados Unidos que estén cursando en grados del qinto al octavo.

Las fotos y la explicación de lo documentado deben ser recibidos o tener el mata-sellos del correo en o antes del 9 de mayo del 2008.

Applications Available for Lunar and Planetary Institute 2008 Field-Based Workshop

"Floods and Flows: Exploring Mars Geology on Earth ," a NASA-sponsored workshop for educators, will be held July 13-19, 2008. Spend the week with planetary scientists visiting the site of ancient Glacial Lake Missoula and tracing its flood waters through Montana, Idaho and into Washington. From these field experiences and accompanying classroom activities, participants will build an understanding of surface processes on Earth, including water flow, volcanism, glaciation and sedimentation. Attendees will extend their understanding to interpret what the features on the surface of Mars suggest about the past environments and history of the Red Planet.

The experience will be divided between the field and lab, where participants work with classroom-tested, hands-on inquiry-based activities and resources that can be used to enhance Earth and space science teaching in the classroom. Participants receive lesson plans, supporting resources and presentations.

El Centro Hemisférico de Cooperación en Investigación y Educación en Ingeniería y Ciencia Aplicada (CoHemis)del Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez de la Universidad de Puerto Rico estará llevando a cabo el Campamento de Verano 2008 del 14 al 20 de julio de 2008 con el tema Aprendiendo Biotecnología en Equipo y a través de Investigación y Centros Interdisciplinarios.

El campamento tendrá un componente residencial, viajes a laboratorios de investigación, conferencias, talleres y un día de logros, donde los maestros y estudiantes compartirán sus experiencias presentando lo que han aprendido sobre Biotecnología. El campamento involucrará la participación de equipos educativos compuestos de estudiantes de escuela superior, estudiantes universitarios del Programa de Preparación de Maestros y graduados extranjeros, maestros locales e internacionales. El mismo es libre de costo y se proveerá alimentos
durante las actividades.

Como requisito para elegibilidad, los maestros deben tener (preferiblemente) una preparación en ciencias y ser maestros activos entre los grados 7‐12. Los interesados deberán llenar una solicitud de participación y enviar junto con la misma un sumario biográfico (SB), un resumen de no más de 250 palabras describiendo el impacto e interés de participación en el campamento y dos cartas de recomendación.

IGES 12th Annual Art Contest for Children in Grades 2-4
€ Theme: ''The Ocean: From Top to Bottom!''

Arlington, Va.--What do you see when you picture the ocean? Waves crashing onto a sandy beach? Dolphins leaping out of and into the water? A sailboat or large ship floating in the distance?

These are probably the kinds of images that come to mind. Yet, there¹s more to the ocean than what¹s going on at the surface. There¹s a whole world of water, plants and animals below.

An art contest for grades 2-4 challenges students to explore the ocean from top to bottom and then draw a picture showing what they learned. This is the 12th annual art contest held by the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) in Arlington, Va. The contest supports national science education standards for grades K-4.

The winning artist will receive a $250 savings bond, and his or her artworkz1 will be printed as the 2007 IGES greeting card. Second- and third-place winners receive a $100 and $50 savings bond, respectively. Everyone who sends in an entry will receive a certificate of participation. Artwork will be judged by a panel including artists, scientists and IGES staff members.

Entries are due Oct. 26, 2007.

New for 2007 Contest! -- Lockheed Martin Corporation is generously funding the development and printing of a 2008 calendar featuring the top 12 entries in this art contest. NASA and the International Technology Education Association, or ITEA, present the NASA Engineering Design Challenge: Lunar Plant Growth Chamber for the 2007-2008 school year. Elementary, middle and high school students design, build and evaluate lunar plant growth chambers -- while engaging in research- and standards-based learning experiences. Students participate in the engineering design process and learn how to conduct a scientific experiment.

Choose from three ways to participate in the challenge:

Educators who complete the STS-118 Design Challenge with their students can request cinnamon basil seeds that have flown in space on the STS-118 space shuttle mission. Participants will receive space-flown and Earth-based control seeds. Students may use the seeds to test the designs of the lunar plant growth chambers. The seeds will be available on a limited basis.

REGISTRATION OPENS FOR NEW NASA ENGINEERING DESIGN CHALLENGE

WASHINGTON - As space shuttle Endeavour and 10 million cinnamon basil seeds are set to launch on a mission to the International Space Station, NASA has opened registration for the Lunar Plant Growth Chamber challenge.

Students participating in the challenge will design and build their own greenhouse chambers to analyze and study plant growth from the space-flown seeds following their return to Earth. Students will conduct classroom experiments that may help NASA find new ways to grow and sustain plants in space and on the moon - a critical need for future
space exploration.

Seeds will be available to the first 100,000 registrants for the Lunar Plant Growth Chamber challenge. Registrants must be kindergarten through 12th grade educators who are residents of the United States or U.S. territories and outlying areas.

The challenge is part of NASA's Engineering Design Challenge program. Applications are now available for educators interested in joining NASA Explorer Schools during the 2008-2009 school year. Schools from the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands may apply for the NES 2008-2009 school year. NES offers unique opportunities designed to engage and educate the future scientists who may someday advance U.S. scientific interests through space exploration.

Teams composed of full-time teachers and a school administrator develop and implement a three-year action plan to address local challenges in science, technology and mathematics education for grades 4-9. Schools that are selected are eligible to receive funding during the three-year partnership to purchase technology tools. The project also provides educators and students with content-specific activities that can be used within the curricula to excite students about science, technology, engineering, and math.

Adjunto invitación a reunión de la comunidad con el Dr. Wayne Van Citters, Director de Astronomía para la Fundación Nacional de Ciencias (NSF por sus siglas en inglés). Esta visita es de gran importancia para el futuro del Observatorio de Arecibo y su presencia allí ayudará de gran manera.

Estimado Alcalde, Banquero, Comerciante, Educador, Oficial de Turismo:

Solicito su ayuda en relación a una importante visita, la cual tiene una relación significativa con eI futuro del Observatorio de Arecibo. Durante los días 26 y 27 de junio llevaremos a cabo Reuniones de Comunidad con el Dr. Wayne Van Citters, Director de Astronomía para la Fundación Nacional de Ciencias (NSF por sus siglas en inglés). El Dr. Van Citters es el Administrador de NSF más cercanamente asociado con el “Senior Review” (recomendaciones presentadas por un panel evaluador sobre la reducción y redistribución de fondos a facilidades científicas como la nuestra) y el impacto que éste ha tenido en el panorama presupuestario del Observatorio. Sin mayor detalle, la recomendación del “Senior Review” es que el Observatorio debería cerrar. La Reunión de Comunidad ha sido convocada por el Dr. Van Citters; él desea entender el impacto que el posible cierre del Observatorio ha tenido, o puede tener, sobre la economía local y la educación científica en Puerto Rico.

La reunión con el Dr. Van Citters se llevará a cabo el 26 de junio, a las 10:00 am, en el Teatro de la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Arecibo. Hemos invitado a esta reunión a los alcaldes de los pueblos cercanos, personas asociadas al mundo de los negocios, comercios, intereses de la industria del turismo, intereses académicos y a toda la comunidad que rodea al Observatorio de Arecibo. Habrá un panel con el Dr. Van Citters, en un encuentro con la audiencia a manera de “descubrimiento de información”. Este panel estará compuesto por representantes con posibilidades de encontrar soluciones para conseguir fondos, incluyendo representantes políticos de la Isla, representantes de NSF, representantes de la UPR, oficiales de la Universidad de Cornell, y un especialista en mercadeo comercial.

Tired of the same old genetics activities? Come and be part of something new!

The Genetic Science Learning Center is embarking on a breakthrough new project and we need your help! The project will develop highly interactive online and investigative classroom learning experiences in heredity and genetics that will be available worldwide on this website. Beginning at the upper elementary level and progressing through to high school, materials developed as part of this project will engage today’s learners and prepare them for life in the genomic age.
We are looking for Elementary, Middle and High School science teachers to participate in an innovative 3-day workshop to begin the development process.

This workshop is an opportunity to work together with an innovative group of teachers, curriculum developers, science educators, web developers and multimedia artists to think creatively about:

The genetics knowledge and skills students will need for life in the 21st Century.
A learning progression that builds genetics knowledge and skills across grade levels, from upper elementary (grades 5/6), through middle school (grades 7/8) and into high school (grades 9/10).
How inquiry-based curriculum materials designed to build genetics knowledge and skills can be grounded in current science education standards but also go beyond the standards, which are out of date with respect to today’s genome science.
How best to utilize the multimedia capabilities of the Internet to support inquiry-based student learning at each grade band.
Science examples that will be relevant and interesting to students and that can be used to teach genetics knowledge and skills, both within grade bands and across grade bands.
Your role will be to share your expertise and serve as a consultant to the Genetic Science Learning Center as, together, we begin envisioning and planning these new curriculum materials.

We are looking for teachers with:

A willingness to engage in discussions with teachers at all grade levels, in order to develop an integrated learning progression of genetics concepts
A willingness to “think outside the box”, beyond the learning experiences they currently use with their students to teach genetics
An interest in thinking creatively about how to integrate Internet-based multi-media technologies with classroom learning experiences and laboratory experiments

La Dra. Cristina Pomales de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, Recinto de Mayagüez, nos envía esta información sobre un taller para maestros de ciencias y matemáticas de nivel intermedio y superior que se llevará a cabo el 9 de julio en el Westin Rio Mar en Rio Grande.

El taller es de 8am a 3pm y si usted es de la zona de Mayagüez (o pueblos limítrofes) y está interesado en recibir servicio de transportación, el Rector de la UPRM nos ha ofrecido el mismo siempre y cuando haya "quorum".
